THE TRUTH ABOUT BAO BAO

Many of the emails I receive from my readers/ viewers are questions about Bao Bao.
I love my little Bao so much it pains me to think of how many rabbits and other small pets are eventually abandoned after their owner realizes just how much attention and maintenance they actually require.
I thought it would be helpful to address your questions once and for all via video.
Even if this enlightens just one person to make a more conscious decision on whether or not to adopt, then I'll be happy I posted this video >x<

  2. One advice to everyone is that... animals are like children, once you start giving them all the care and love, beware to be attached and forever be their mother/father because they will become attach to you and love you. I love my little one and he was my first pet besides all the fishes I had when I was younger. I love him and care for him like he's my own kid. I take him out and let him meet other people/dogs/animals to socialize and he will run back to his mommy when he's tired and wants to take a nap or just make sure his mommy is still around.

your Bao Bao is so adorable =]

  7. I absolutely love Bao Bao. I seriously look for your photos on twitter just to see his adorable little face. The video on his was precious.

Side note: I agree with you... rabbits shouldn't be locked up in a cage their entire life! I'm so glad you stressed that. :)

  10. Bao Bao is adorable. Great video to try to educate people about bunnies. I volunteered at an animal shelter for many years and a lot of people don't realize how much work, time, and money go into taking proper care of pets.

  12. Bao Boa is so adorable. If only we could have rabbits as pets in Queensland, Australia. It would be worth every bit of the huge effort for those melting moments. Beautiful! :))

  14. Hi Alex! It sounds like you're doing a great job with Bao Bao! I've taken care of various bunnies over the years, and my own is turning 10 next month!

I just want to encourage you to keep cuddling and training Bao Bao because at first when I brought home my bunny I also thought she was pretty "cold" as well, but over time she's bonded to me but now she licks me as if she were grooming another bunny and runs to me for pets! It took a while to figure out that they don't like to be held because they are prey animals and hence are afraid of heights. So my vet taught me to hold my rabbit with a firm hug and with both arms--it makes them feel secure. So I do this either standing up or sitting on a chair..if I'm close to the ground she'll jump out. My bun will now sit on my lap for hours if I'm on my desk chair and relax. This is also a great time to pet the top of their head--like you said they don't love being pet that much--but when you're holding them petting their forehead can relax them. My bunny purrs when I pet her forehead now...a bunny purr is the softest grinding of their teeth!

And it's a really good sign that your Bao Bao binkys! It's just like when horses buck (a combination of a twist and jump at the same time) in the field when they are happy and have enough space :)

My bunny will poop 90% of the time in her litter box and about 10% outside it, but I also found that sometimes if the room is big enough she will start a 2nd litter spot in a corner. So I usually set up another litter box to eliminate the need to pick up as often.

I hope this helps you and anyone else who is thinking of getting a rabbit! Each rabbit will have a slightly different personality but just like puppies--if you expose them to people, lots of cuddles, different situations, they won't be as timid or aggressive towards humans. Bao Bao is lucky to have you! :)

  16. Please don't feed your bunny human treats :( ..... Check out rabbit.org for do's and dont's of bunny diet. Timothy hay should be the bulk of an adult bunny's diet... Pellets are high in fat. Just sharing what my vets have passed onto me. Also, Oxbow is the healthiest brand for bunny food, in my opinion - costs a bit more, but little bun is worth it.
